Trapped in a sinking vehicle? Here's what you should do

Traffic accidents can happen anywhere, but there are a few places where the risk of injury increases. Have you ever driven close to a lake? Do you know what to do if you drive into a lake or river as a result of being hit by another driver?

If you live anywhere near water, then you need to know what to do if you or someone you love is trapped in a vehicle that has been hit and pushed underwater or partially underwater. Interestingly, it is easier to escape from the vehicle than you may believe.

What do you do if your vehicle is sinking into a lake or deep water?

Contrary to what people suggest, it's important to open the window immediately and to let the water come into the vehicle. Once there is pressure on the vehicle underwater, it will be nearly impossible to do so, and the force of the water entering the vehicle could knock you out.

Allow the water to reach your chin before unbuckling your seat belt. Take a deep breath, then hold it and open the door or swim out the window once the water has stopped coming in.

While many people have the idea that you'll be confused about which way to go, just hold your breath. The oxygen in your body will help your body float to the surface, or at least in the right direction. Done correctly, this technique can save your life and the lives of those in your vehicle.

If you lose a loved one in a crash involving water, know that the person responsible for the collision will still be liable. Your attorney can help you make a claim for any injuries you suffer.
