Do you make these mistakes when driving on the highway?

Driving on the highway is different from driving in the city. Not only are you moving at a faster rate of speed, but you're likely to be in close proximity to larger vehicles.

Here are five mistakes many people make when driving on the highway, all of which increase the risk of an accident:

  • Ignoring the speed limit: The faster you drive the more difficult it is to control your vehicle. It also takes you longer to stop. This is why you should follow the speed limit at all times.
  • Tailgating other vehicles: Leave enough space between your vehicle and the one in front of yours, as you must give yourself adequate time to stop.
  • Driving in the left lane: The left lane is meant for passing, so spend the majority of your time cruising in the right lane. This keeps you out of harm's way.
  • Neglecting to consider traffic conditions: From rush hour slow-downs to construction, these conditions should alter your driving style.
  • Driving distracted: Highway driving often leads to distractions, such as talking on the phone, sending texts and conversing with passengers.

If you're able to avoid these common mistakes on the highway, you'll feel better about your ability to prevent trouble.

If another driver makes one of these mistakes, they could cause an accident that results in damage to your vehicle and serious injury. Call 911 for help, let police take over the scene and visit a local hospital as quickly as possible for an examination and treatment.

As you recover, contact your insurance company and take the steps necessary to hold the negligent driver responsible for your injuries and other damages.
