Follow these general safety tips when using power tools

On Behalf of | Jul 12, 2018 | workers' compensation

Depending on your profession, you may use power tools all day long. For example, this is common among people who work in the construction industry.

While power tools are preferable to hand tools in many cases, there’s something to remember: One of these can cause serious injury or even death.

Here are some general safety tips when using power tools:

  • Always read the safety instructions before using a power tool for the first time
  • Don’t carry a power tool by the hose or cord
  • Disconnect tools when they’re not in use
  • Inspect power tools for defects and damage before use
  • Keep other people a safe distance away from you when using a power tool
  • Maintain tools according to the manufacturer’s suggestions
  • Never use a power tool in a manner for which it’s not intended
  • Remove damaged power tools from service
  • Wear the proper safety equipment, such as a helmet and gloves
  • Beware of anything that could get caught in a power tool, such as loose clothing or jewelry

As a long time user of power tools, you may assume that you know exactly what you’re doing. However, there are times when mistakes happen when you least expect it.

If you’re part of a workplace accident, such as one in which you’re injured by a power tool, stop what you are doing and call for help.

You should also report the accident to your employer, as you want to be clear that you were injured on the job.

If your medical team suggests that you take time away from work, you may want to file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits.
