Don’t let a ladder accident knock you off your feet

Regardless of your profession and industry, if you find yourself using a ladder on a regular basis, you must realize the risks associated with this activity.

Even if you have many years of experience using a ladder on job sites, you must never forget that one mistake can cause a serious accident.

Here are seven ladder safety tips to follow at all times:

  • Inspect the ladder before taking the first step, paying close attention to any defects or damage
  • Make sure you place the ladder on level and firm ground
  • Never place a ladder in close proximity to vehicle traffic or a door that may open
  • Maintain three points of contact at all times
  • Never carry a heavy load up or down a ladder, as this could cause you to lose your balance
  • Never stand on the top rung of a ladder
  • Don't stretch or lean when standing on a ladder, as this type of movement could cause it to tip over

Depending on the type of ladder accident, it's possible that the end result could be a serious injury, such as a broken bone, concussion or even death.

If you're ever part of a ladder accident at your place of employment, don't attempt to get up and "walk it off." You should immediately call for medical help, while also informing your employer as to what went wrong.

If your injuries will keep you out of work in the future, don't wait to file a workers' compensation claim. This money can help you get by as you recover.
